ProCal™ 3-0-0 Plus20Ca: Organic Chelated Calcium Fertilizer for Plants

Contact Us
This organic chelated calcium fertilizer, ProCal™ 3-0-0 Plus20Ca is a full-soluble, dry calcium fertilizer approved for organic production, designed specifically for providing micronized organic calcium via foliar application. Derived from calcium carbonate, Ferticell™ ProCal™ liquid calcium delivers a less than one-micron particle size, creating a completely water-soluble organic calcium with 3% plant-derived protein nitrogen content. This protein Nitrogen in ProCal™ is proven to facilitate calcium uptake and transportation within the plant, which raises the performance of ProCal™ above the competition.

Calcium must be several times higher in the external solution.

ProCalCalcium, known to be a phloem immobile element, will not travel downward to fruit from leaves. Nevertheless, the plant will allocate calcium traveling up from roots giving priority to leaf structures before fruit. An effective calcium fertilizer nutrition program should increase soil availability (source) while reducing leaves’ total demand (sink). While still being effective as soil-applied calcium, this is the mechanism that ProCal™ works in.

ProCal™ provides a source of plant-available chelated calcium that increases the shelf life of fruits and increases the strength of cell walls within plants and fruit tissue. When soil and petiole analysis show adequate levels of calcium, yield production produces larger, more evenly shaped fruits and vegetables.

Calcium Fertilizer is the only counter-ion for balancing soils.

Correcting & Preventing Calcium Deficiencies with ProCal™

ProCal™ Fertilizer will quickly remedy the disintegration of cell walls and collapse of plant tissue usually exhibited in calcium-deficient plants. ProCal™ is phenomenal for balancing soils through a counter ion exchange. In plants, it effectively reinforces or strengthens cell walls by increasing cuticular thickness and turgor pressure, thereby reducing preventing infection. In calcium deficiency, cell walls disintegrate, and tissues collapse. Plants with thicker cuticles and higher cell turgor pressure are less susceptible to infections, and, if infected, are more likely to fight them off.

A typical symptom of Calcium deficiency is the disintegration of cell walls and the collapse of affected tissues. (Bussler, 1963)

Natural Chelation Calcium from Plant Derived L-Amino Acids

It is known that amino acids are effective natural chelating agents. With the amino acids in ProCal™, nutrients are used efficiently, and nutrient uptake is improved, reducing losses, and improving yield. The basic principle of chelates is very simple; they are thin coatings applied around nutrients as a kind of candy shell. The availability, observed selectivity, competitive efficiency, non-toxicity and even fertilizing properties of L-Amino Acids make them a particularly soil-friendly chelator and can hence be applied in a wide range of remediation procedures, in this instance, to translocate calcium through plant tissue.

It is important to remember that not all amino acids fit into this spectrum. Animal-based amino acid fertilizers may have amino acids classified as D-Amino Acids. This is due to the process in manufacturing called racemization, which either partially or destroys valuable L-Amino acids like tryptophan, cysteine, and threonine, some of the most common amino acids found in ProCal’s 3% N content. Since Ferticell™ uses proteolytic enzymes to hydrolyze our protein hydrolysate at a temperature below 140°F, racemization is not a concern, resulting in a higher quality product.

ProCal™ in Organic Apple Production

Sweet and tart flavors and crisp flesh make Honeycrisp, a variety developed by the University of Minnesota, very popular with consumers. It comprises 8% of Washington’s total apple crop. Nearly half of the organic apple acreage in Washington is Gala or Fuji, but Honeycrisp is the third most popular variety grown organic.

Research has linked bitter pit to calcium deficiency and interactions with other nutrients. Growers resort to many in-season foliar calcium sprays to control the disease. Due to its low price and high ProCal™ liquid calcium analysis, chelated calcium chloride is the most used product. However, chloride salts can damage foliage, resulting in leaf burns. Calcium chloride is a certified organic material. We conducted this study to determine if Ferticell™ applications of ProCal™ 3-0-0Plus20Ca affected bitter pit incidence. Located in Yakima, Washington, the trial was conducted in a conventional Honeycrisp orchard.

ProCal-Trial-CaCl
ProCal-Trial-Ferticell

The membrane-protecting effect of Calcium is most prominent under various stress condition such as low temperatures and anaerobisis. (Zsolodos and Klarvaly, 1978)

Five replications of each treatment were conducted in a randomized complete block design. Treatments consisted of the Grower Standard PrimoCal (6% Ca3(C6H5O7)2) at 1 gal/ac + CalQuick (32% CaCl) at 4 lbs./ac, versus ProCal™ at 2 lbs./ac, and the Untreated plot.

The ProCal™ fertilizer program resulted in over $37,000 per acre gross return due to higher yields and relatively low bitter pit incidence. Untreated plots trailed by 4%, while grower standard calcium chloride yielded the lowest gross returns.

Despite the relatively low bitter pit losses resulting from the calcium chloride program, the untreated plots’ higher yield offset heavy cull rates.
