SmartCal™: Soluble Foliar Calcium Fertilizer for Plants

Contact Us
SmartCal™ 3-0-0 Plus20Ca is a dry calcium agriculture fertilizer specifically designed for the application of micronized calcium via foliar sprays to increase calcium uptake. Based on calcium carbonate, Ferticell has a particle size of less than one micron, resulting in a water-soluble calcium supplement that contains 3% nitrogen derived from plant proteins. SmartCal™ contains this protein Nitrogen that facilitates calcium uptake and transport throughout the plant, thus outperforming its competition.

In the external solution, calcium must be several times higher.

Known as a phloem immobile element, calcium will not travel downward from leaves to fruit. However, calcium is allocated from the roots to leaf structures first before fruit in the plant. The aim of calcium uptake nutrition is to increase soil availability (source) and reduce leaves’ total demand (sink). It still works as soil-applied calcium, but this is how SmartCal™ works best.

Using SmartCal™ agriculture fertilizer, plants and fruit tissue gain a source of plant-available calcium which helps fruit keep fresher for longer through increased calcium uptake. Enhanced yield production occurs when plants’ soils and petioles contain adequate calcium levels.

The only counter-ion that can balance soil is calcium.

SmartCal™: Maintaining a calcium balance and preventing calcium deficiencies

Calcium-deficient plants often exhibit disintegration of cell walls and a collapse of tissue because of calcium deficiency. SmartCal™ balances soil by using a counter-ion exchange process. By increasing cuticular thickness and turgor pressure, it effectively reinforces or strengthens cell walls in plants, which reduces infection. Plants with thicker cuticles and higher cell turgor pressure are less prone to infections, and if infected, will likely fight them off.

A typical symptom of Calcium deficiency is the disintegration of cell walls and the collapse of affected tissues. (Bussler, 1963)

L-Amino Acids Derived from Plants: Natural Chelation

Amino acids are known to be natural chelating agents. Through the amino acids in SmartCal™ agriculture fertilizer, nutrients are used efficiently, and nutrient and calcium uptake is improved, resulting in decreased losses and improved yields. Chelates work very simply; they are thin coatings applied around nutrients as a kind of candy shell. They make a particularly soil-friendly chelator due to their availability, observed selectivity, competitive efficiency, non-toxicity, and even fertilizing properties and can be applied to a wide range of remediation procedures, in this case, to translocate calcium throughout plant tissue.

All amino acids do not fall within this spectrum. It is possible to find D-Amino Acids in animal-based fertilizers. This is due to the process of racemization, which breaks down or destroys some of the essential amino acids found in animal-based hydrolysates containing tryptophan, cysteine, and threonine, but in a D-Amino acid form, unlike SmartCal’s L-form. The fact that Ferticell™ uses proteolytic enzymes to hydrolyze our protein hydrolysate at a temperature below 140°F prevents racemization, resulting in a higher-quality product that increases calcium uptake.

The membrane-protecting effect of Calcium is most prominent under various stress condition such as low temperatures and anaerobisis. (Zsolodos and Klarvaly, 1978)
